This course is for students who wish to progress their Chemistry knowledge beyond GCSE. A level Chemistry will suit students who are: Genuinely interested in the study of molecules and their interactions; wanting to develop an inquisitive nature into drug development & actions; wanting to understand the impacts of chemicals on the environment.

In addition to the standard sixth form entry requirements (a minimum of 5 x GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above from a range of subjects) students should obtain at least grade 5 in Mathematics and English Language and either grades 6, 6, 5 in triple science (with the 6 in Chemistry) or grades 66 in Combined Science.

Content covered includes detailed knowledge of the atom, amount of substance, acids & bases, redox reactions, electrons in relation to structure and bonding, periodicity, Enthalpy changes, qualitative equilibrium, Organic chemistry, organic syntheses, Entropy & free energy and qualitative & quantitative analytical techniques. All are supported by practical work that is embedded within the learning and a ‘How science works’ approach such that students can apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations. A combination of theory & practical work contributes to the achievement of the practical endorsement certificate. You will study data manipulation, collection, analysis & interpretation, thus developing your mathematical skills. You will have the opportunity to develop presentation techniques & styles whilst carrying out independent research.

At the end of the 2-year course students sit 3 written exams of between 1.5 – 2.25 hrs. Students are also continually assessed during the courses practical investigations leading to a practical competency certificate. Exams are based around testing & applying your knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures.

Skills developed throughout the course are highly regarded across multiple disciplines & by many employers & universities. They will allow entry on to a wide variety of further education courses including not just medicine, dentistry & pharmacy but also many STEM based routes, as well as courses focusing on critical thinking skills such as law.
